Laura Mulvey - Gaze Theory

Laura Mulvey's (Male) Gaze Theory

Laura Mulvey's theory states that women are always shown as a sex object through camera angles, this is done in order to the viewpoint of a hetrosexual man which makes them gain power. The camera angles force the audience to look at women in a way which creates pleasure through a narrative cinema also forcing women and homosexual men to view women in a way in which they dont want to.
Laura Mulvey's theory includes three 'looks' which are created through film.
The first look is the perspective which is created through the males character on screen and how they percieve the female character. The second is the perspective from the spectator as they see the female character on screen. The third and final look is the first and second combined, the male character's perspective and the womans representation.

Conventionally, the theory would be used mostly in RnB/Hip Hop genres as the artist tends to sing about women and sex, e.g. 50 Cent - Lil' Bit.

In our music video we are going to challenge Mulvey's theory and not show women as sex objects but just as a normal person.
